Sailed in Tordéns, but moved to Finnlines, where he was flag chief engineer for many years, until retirement, by which time he had moved to Turku. Married midwife Tyra Johansson's daughter Maj-Lis. Bought the Wiklundska house and became a resident of Näsby. Alf was torpedoed off the Faroe Islands, was interned on the Isle of Man during the war.
