Outside the "Larus field" at the Kittuis ferry beach
Description
Air-cushion craft Larus (2 negatives) Larus' dimensions: 33 x 14.7 m, 2600 kW from a total of 4 engines.
Built at Wärtsilä Helsingforsvarvet, was handed over to the then Road and Water Authority on 10.12.1981, to be used as a winter ferry between Houtskär and Korpo.
The vessel never met expectations, so it was taken out of service after only a short test period of a few weeks. Larus had too little car deck capacity, made too much noise and was a fuel guzzler! Moreover, the resistance of the archipelago's inhabitants to the innovation was probably quite compact!
Larus was taken to Turku and laid up. At the end of March 1983 she was taken to Karlö (Hailuoto) and used in the spring to break ice floes in Kalajoki.
In 1985 Larus was sold to Canada.
