Ivar Hägerstrand

Description

Captain Ivar Hägerstrand born in Jomala, Åland but lived in Pargas, has sailed with many Houtskär residents. Born in 1889 and died in 1952.

Miscellaneous

He is probably the person who rounded Cape Horn most times on sailing ships.
In an interview with ÅU (11.11.1949), he says that it was forty-nine times.

"Graduated as a sea captain in Mariehamn in 1914, master of jbk Mariechen, ss Edgar, bk Loch Linnhe, bk Woodburn, 4mbk Hougomont, bk Winterhude, 4mbk Viking and 4mbk Passat.
Was in command of Passat during her last voyage around Cape Horn on the wheat route in 1949. Is considered to be the captain who has the most roundings of Cape Horn behind him, probably 39."
