Utö in winter, 1930s. Utö village seen from the east. The house on the far right in the foreground is the customs officer's residence. There was a customs station on Utö during the Russian era. Later, the house was used by the army and was first a soldier's home and later an officer's club. Today the house is owned by Hanna Kovanen who has accommodation in the house. On the lower right is pilot Valfrid Bergman's house on Enskär. Enskär was a separate island for a long time, hence the name. During World War I, the Russian military built a bridge between Enskär and the mainland of Utö. Today, the area between Utö and Enskär is called Sundet. Two roads now connect the islands to each other. At unusually high tide, water still enters the Sound.
