Herakles belonged to A/B Oceanfart Helsingfors (AL). It was then Finland's second largest ship at 8200 TDW. The best ships in the Finnish merchant fleet had been taken in war reparations by the Soviet Union, among others. S/S Kronoborg, which was the largest, 12200 TDW.
