Checking the direction of the current in the water (Späjja strömin ) by Ralf Ahlstrand was called the ”Seine king” because he was the oldest member of the seine team.

They looked for the direction of the current by dropping tobacco ash, chewed bread, horse shit, old herring scales that went with the water, with the direction of the current they knew where to go and draw seine.
