Description

Studio picture of William Karlsson. William was a very knowledgeable man. He had been a sailor, sailed on long voyages, etc. Attached to the registration card is a newspaper note about the mine explosion of the s/s Wellamo in 1916, where William was involved. He was a bricklayer for a long time. He also worked at the sawmill in Norrsund. NOTE. In the picture bag there is a picture, which was in an old photo collection, which says "Österblad's William ?". That it is William is not entirely certain.

Miscellaneous

The picture is on 3080. The mineblast took place off Kokkola in August 1916. Wellamo was FÅA's first boat to operate regularly between Finland and Sweden. Its first route was between Hanko and Stockholm.
**Note : s/s Wellamo was not mineblasted. She was stopped by German U 47, traveling between Sundsvall and Yxpila with passengers on board. After the passengers and crew had entered the lifeboats, Wellamo was sunk by the submarine using cannon fire. The ship sank on August 29, 9 miles NW of Tankar lighthouse. CGÖ**
