Description

Houtskär's first saw. Purchased by brothers Axel and Ben Westerlund. They bought an area of land on Fiskö in Hyppeis, sold the forest and set up a sawmill on Svens isthmus, opposite Sandskär. A locomotive pulled the saw. There was a fear in the community that the forest would be cut down; something new was entering the community. The sawmill was moved after a few years to Brudsten in Träsk, on land that Axel Westerlund had purchased. New owners came into the picture. Viktor Bergvall became master sawyer. The saw was moved from Brudsten to Näsby.

Miscellaneous

The saw stopped working in 1917, when it was sold to Åland. The saw was in Brudsten between 1911 and 1912. Picture is on 3116. The picture is taken when the saw was set up at Harlot in Kittuis. Could it have something to do with the construction of the steamboat bridge?
