Description

The LARUS hovercraft, which was known as LORJUS in Houtskär.

Miscellaneous

Larus’ dimensions: 33 x 14.7 m, 2,600 kW from a total of 4 engines.

Built at the Wärtsilä Helsinki shipyard, it was handed over to the then Road and Waterways Administration on December 10, 1981, to be used as a winter ferry between Houtskär and Korpo.

The vessel never lived up to expectations, which is why it was taken out of service after only a short trial period of a few weeks.
Larus had insufficient car deck capacity, was too noisy, and was a gas guzzler!
Moreover, the archipelago residents’ resistance to the innovation was quite strong!

Larus was taken to Turku and laid up.
At the end of March 1983, it was taken to Karlö (Hailuoto) and used during the spring to break up ice ridges in Kalajoki.

In 1985, Larus was sold to Canada.
