The house was built by August (Ben) Westerlund. On reg. no. 3409 there is a picture of what the house looked like when it was newly built. On September 18, 1948, the house was completely destroyed by a devastating fire, caused by small boys playing with matches in the attic.

Ben Westerlund financed the construction of the house with capital he had acquired as a "gold digger" in Alaska. See further information in A book about Houtskär part II page 248.
