On board the sailing ship there was always at least one ship's bell. It was mainly used to mark the time. Each watch was four hours long and at the end of the first half hour a stroke, or glass as it was called, was struck on the ship's clock. After the second half hour, two glasses and so on.
When the watch was over, eight glasses were struck. The ship's bell was also used to call attention, for example in fog. Source: The Maritime History Museum, Sweden.
