Description

The Berghamn island group, located at teh fairway between Åbo and Stockholm, is mentioned to have had pilots as early as the 17th century. The early-started pilotage activity is probably connected to the sheltered natural harbor located in Berghamn. The pilots must have been on duty at first from their own homes and other buildings located in suitable places. Actual guardhouses were only started to be built in the 19th century. In 1857, a guard house according to the type drawings after the Crimean War was built on the same place where the current station building is located. A new, one-story, one-story guardhouse was built in its place in 1896. There is no certain information about the later construction stages of Berghamn's pilot guardhouse. The late 19th century building may exist as a heavily altered part of the current building. Based on the drawing collections in the archives of the Maritime Administration, it can be assumed that changes were made to the Berghamn pilot station in the 1930s and 1960s. However, pilot operations in the building continued until 1984, and its current appearance refers to the post-World War II era. Source Museiverket
