Description

A general strike broke out in Finland on 01.03.1956 and lasted until 19.03.1956, for three weeks! The ms "Finnsailor", on which Armas Toivonen was the captain, anchored with several other ships in the ice off Hanko.

Summary by the brothers Bo and Lasse Toivonen:
"We went there with Manne Mattsson by taxi to Hanko, via Rymättylä on the ice. The picket guards showed their fists outside the bus station in Turku, when we pasted there.
There were lots of boats outside Hanko in the roadstead, we were about 2 weeks on board and Finnsailor was there longer than that.

Finnsailor's destination was Helsinki, we were on board the ship
when it went to Helsinki.

Manne drove on the ice all the way to Finnsailor, Manne's car
was refuelled with petrol from Finnsailor, he did not dare to stop
at some gas station, because he was afraid that the car would
be smashed.

When we were away from school, we had to take our homework books with us.

An icebreaker, probably "VOIMA", came and helped out the ships which were in the ice and tooke them in convoy to Helsinki,
Finnsailor was the last in the convoy.
