Description

Sheet piling of a schooner in LATE's shipyard.
LATE's production was unique in that it took place entirely indoors, from prefabricated parts, mainly the keel, fore and aft rods, frames and deck beams. These parts were made of glulam and could thus be manufactured in exactly the same dimensions for each ship.
LATE was the only war damage shipyard that had such a production process.

Inside the hall there were 8 bunk beds, partly in 2 floors. The hulls in different stages of production were moved between the construction beds with the help of large overhead cranes, a kind of "conveyor belt principle". The same workers did the same phase of work all the time, which meant that it was not necessary to train the entire staff for all phases of work.
It was claimed that old, experienced boatbuilders found this procedure difficult to absorb, so they quit after a short time.
The yard preferred inexperienced carpenters, who could then be trained for a specific stage of work.

Only masting and rigging took place outdoors at the equipment dock.
