Construction began in August 1949 and the building was completed in spring 1952.
The initiative to build a health center in Houtskär was taken by the Västra Ämtervik committee, the construction was realized under municipal auspices and financed by donations. The donations from the municipality's sponsor town in Sweden, Västra Ämtervik, had been increased in Houtskär through the so-called "sugar crowns". The twin town had used some of the funds collected in Sweden to buy sugar, which was imported to Finland with a license from the authorities and sold for a much higher price. Hence the house was popularly known as the "Sugar House".
The parish sold an area of land in Vitteludd to the municipality, where the health farm was then built. In September 1952, the house was inaugurated for its purpose. The health center housed a doctor's office, a counseling office and some housing.
Over the years, the building has undergone several renovations and extensions until 2017, when a new health station in connection with the "Fridhem" retirement home was opened.
