Description

There was a time before electricity and washing machines.
But even then, clothes had to be washed. The washboard, with its transverse wavy surface of sheet metal or glass, was considered a great improvement on the clapboard used in the 19th century.
The white laundry was boiled in lye after being rubbed on the board, which certainly made it cleaner than in the most sophisticated automatic washing machine.

The washerwoman in the picture is Anna Ekblad from Slobbars in Ö. Saverkeit, b. 05.08.1901.
She was young and probably still unmarried.
The picture was taken in Saverkeit.
