s/s Aranda arrives from the west to the stop at Santjers outside Kittuis. On the ice we see travelers with their luggage, companions, suppliers of goods with their freight, including fish barrels. A man has led a cow out onto the ice, apparently to be sent for slaughter. These winter ships were a very important "lifeline" for the inhabitants of the archipelago, the only way to maintain reasonable communications with the outside world in winter.
