Axel Einar Åkerlind föddes 25.12 -1901  i ett litet torp i Djupels (Jypels, Djupekan)

Description

Axel was born 25.12.1901 in a small croft in Djupels (Jypels, Djupekan).
Axel also had an older brother, John Jakob, who was born in 1897 and a sister named Ellen Erika b. 1904. His father's name was Jakob Kondrad Jakobsson Åkerlind 1860-1909.
Mom came from Brändö, Åland and had a son, Eli, from earlier b. 1890. Her name was Erika Margareta Karlsdotter 1863-1909.
After her father's death they had to move away from Djupels. The croft was moved to Kondrad's brother Erik's (Ville) property on Vesterback and is still there in 2018.
As an 8-year-old, Axel became Markus' little junior peasant, and when the Mårtenssons bought Maars in Kittuis, Axel of course followed. One Midsummer's Eve, he climbed the highest mountain in Kittuis to see if he could see home to Hyppeis, then the homesickness was strong.
On September 1, 1923, Axel traveled to America to join his siblings Elli and Ellen on the ss Stockholm from Gothenburg. He arrived in New York on September 11.
Throughout his time in America, Axel lived with his brother in Jersy City and found work as a carpenter/carpenter and dock builder in Manhattan.
He has told us that there was a rush on the construction sites, if you couldn't saw off exactly, it was better if it was a little too short, because then you didn't have to go down and saw again.
Axel stayed home for a year and met his future wife Birgit.
He traveled to America again, but returned home in 1932, got married and had two children, Edna in 1932 and Magda in 1934.
The family lived at the Hyppeis school until he built his own house at Söderback.
Axel worked mainly as a carpenter.
He has been involved in building many of the new cattle houses in Houtskär. He was also a skilled boat builder and has built several boats.
He was also involved in the seine fishing on the ice and it is said that when he laid out the nets, it was done very carefully.
He had his own landmarks in his head.
He was known as a quiet and calm man.
He left this world out on Damskär with his saw in his hand.
