Description

FAVELL Steel barge, built in 1895 by Charles Hill & Sons in Bristol for their own account. 1106 net, 1334 gross register tons, 237.5 x 36.2 x x 21.3 ft, according to Finnish register 75.40 x 11.04 x 6.50 m FAVELL was the last ocean liner built in Bristol and she was the last one to be registered on the Finnish mainland. She sailed under Hill's own flag until 1897, when she was purchased by J. Söderlund for Raumo Nya Skeppsrederi Ab. Sold in 1907 to Finska Rederi Ab, Lars Krogius, Helsinki. The company was a subsidiary of FÅA and was reorganized in 1911 as Finska Skolskeppsrederiet. Masters during the Finnish period were: Karl and Johan Hallman, K. Itäinen, O. Unonius, J.K. Nordlund, Gösta Hjelt, K. Strömsten, R.J. Christerson and finally from 1929 Sten Lille. After her last white sailing in 1934, FAVELL took a coal cargo to Helsinki and was then sold to Wärtsilä for scrapping in Maxlax, Vyborg, where she made her last voyage in November. Axel Granlund signed on in FAVELL after his 2 years in Australia, to return to Finland. FAVELL departed 06.02.1931 Wallaroo to Falmouth f.o. in wheat cargo, 2196 tons = 27462 bags, arrived 28.05.1931 Cork, departed 20.06.1931 Queenstown, arrived 07.07.1931 Helsinki.
