Description

LAWHILL Four-masted steel barque, built in 1892 by W.B.Thompson & Co. of Dundee, for Charles Barrie of Dundee. 2749 net, 2942 gross reg. tons. 4600 TDW. 317.6 x 45 x 25 feet, according to Finnish register: 101.81 x 13.64 x 7.44 meters. In June 1914 purchased by August Troberg in Mariehamn for £8250. She was laid up in Brest during the first part of the World War. Purchased by Gustaf Erikson in October 1917 for FIM 2,500,000. Was then Finland's largest ship. Captains: August Jansson, Ruben de Cloux, J.E Gustafsson, C. Holmqvist, F. Grönlund, J. A. Söderlund and M. Lindholm. During World War II, the Lawhill was seized by the South African government and sailed throughout the war with Captain Söderlund in command and partly his old crew. A short time after the war she still sailed with another Åland captain, M. Lindholm. First laid up in Lorenco Marques, then in a small river, Tembe, where she was sold and scrapped around 1958.
