Description

ALASTOR: Iron barque, built by Mounsey & Foster of Sunderland in 1875 for R.H. Penney of Shoreham. Then carrying skysail on the mainmast. 797 net, 860 gross register tons, 196.6 x 31.7 x 18.6 feet, according to Finnish measurements 59.55 x 9.61 x 5.64 m. Mostly in service to Australia and New Zealand, for over 20 years captained by Thomas Glazebrook. 1895 sold to M.F. Stray in Kristiansand, Norway. Later she was owned by Hans Hansen in Brevik. Sold to Finland in 1928 and registered in Hanko with Karl Schröder as the main shipowner. At the same time, however, there were strong English ownership interests. All the time in wood freight on England. Masters: A. Karlsson and R.L. Sundblom. At the outbreak of war in 1939 laid up in the Blackwater River. Later sold to a Captain W. Lancaster in Ramsgate and used as a floating restaurant with the name BOUNTY. Scrapped in 1952. Axel Granlund was 1st mate on ALASTOR.
