Description
AXEL, iron barque built in 1876, A Stephen & Sons, Glasgow for J. Boumphrey & Co. in Liverpool with the name "Lochinvar". 685 net reg. tons, 735 gross, L: 184.9, W: 30.1, D: 18.3 feet, according to Finnish register 55.30 x 9.13 x 5.64 meters. The ship was sold in 1887 to Nicholsson & McGill in Liverpool and in 1894 to Sweden, C.M. Bodén, Nordmaling. The main owner moved in 1901 to Norrköping, where the ship was also registered. During the Swedish period, the ship was named P. Wikström Junior. On 28.10.1913, the ship was sold to Åland, received the name "Axel", owner and master Captain John Andersson from Jomala, the price should have been 1300 £. She did not come out during the entire war, but remained in Viborg with wooden cargo. Immediately after the war, the "Axel" was sold to a shipping company named "Alfa". The owners were probably from Finby, Bjärnå. Shortly thereafter, the ship was sold to Hangö Rederi Ab, Hangö, where the ship was then at home until it was sold for scrapping to Sunderland in 1927. During the Hangö period, the "Axel" was first sailed by Captain Arthur Marander, then by Anders Donner, all this time in split-wind speed. Axel Granlund sailed as a sailor on the "Axel" for 8 months and 10 days, 19.11.1913-29.07.1914.
