Description

The galleass Josefina of Ånholm, bottom crawl, above the waterline clinker. Built on Ånholm hill, launched with a lifting winch designed and built by the builder, Edvard Mattsson from Ånholm, who was only 27-28 years old at the time.
In 1899, a severe storm hit Houtskär and destroyed most of the west coast forest. Edvard was allowed by the farmers in Roslax, to take all the wood for the galleass that the windfalls offered, hence the construction of the galleass began.
He named it "JOSEFINA" after his wife.
Edvard's father was then dead and he took over the yacht his father had owned and sold it to Åland in 1908/1909. It sprung a leak with a scrap cargo and sank in the Åland Sea in 1916, picture 3341.
